Principal's Letter

Dear Spruce Families,

Welcome back to school!  We are so excited to have you back with us for what will be another great year of learning in our Spruce community.  This is an amazing time for students, families and teachers as we close the chapter on summer and open the next chapter of the 2017-2018 school year.   We are excited to share with you our continuing work around the Edmonds School District Math Initiative that focuses our teacher professional development on Math, and implementing more effective approaches to teaching Math in classrooms for each and every student.  One of the most important things we are learning about is the idea of teaching and learning with a Growth Mindset.  This centers on the idea that there really is no such thing as “Math People” or “Not Math People”.  The idea is based on the work of Stanford University Professors Carol Dweck and Jo Boaler and brain research that shows how well the brain can adapt to new ideas and circumstances, and that when we present Math as a way of making sense of a situation using Mathematical Thinking, we can all learn math at high levels.  We made some incredible gains last year and are looking forward to another year of rich Math learning. Be on the lookout for 2 Math Nights coming this Fall and Winter where we celebrate our learning in Math and share with you our work.

There are lots of exciting things coming as we move into the Fall  including our first Spruce Family Dinner of the year coming on September 28 with three to follow throughout the year.  This is a wonderful time of food and fellowship where we come together in Potluck style and have a meal in community with each other. All are invited, bring a dish to share if you can.

Speaking of community, I wanted to let you know of a wonderful opportunity coming this year called Spruce Parent Partnership.  This partnership is made up of Spruce parents and teachers whose sole purpose is to support Spruce and the incredible work that our students are doing every day.  There are many ways that Spruce needs help.  Spruce Parent Partnership helps Spruce Elementary by raising funds for school supplies, books, field trips, science projects and more!  Last year, partnership funds helped to send our 5th grade students to the University of Washington for a day of touring and learning about university life.  Funds also paid for books for our 5th and 6th grade students to take part in the Battle of the Books.  If you are interested in helping out with games at recess, reading to a student a few times a month, helping during a Movie Night, or volunteering for a fundraiser then this is the place for you!  We will meet once per month with dinner included to work on a variety of projects.  If you are interested, please come to the meetings!  If you worry about long term commitment, don't!  Your help is appreciated no matter what! If you have questions, please call me at 425.431.7727.  I am so looking forward to seeing you at our 1st official meeting on October 12 @6:30 PM.  More information will be shared about this important work at our Spruce Family Dinner on September 28.

Finally, we are so happy to report that over the summer, we received three new portables to help us as we continue to grow in enrollment.  They are installed along Dragon Lane at the back of our campus and looking beautiful.  We will have more information coming soon about Phase I of the Spruce Elementary Rebuild including a meeting on October 5th at 6:00 PM.

I can’t tell you how excited we are to partner with you this year.  I and my staff are focused on your students as learners and as important members of our community.  We are really looking forward to making this one of the most successful Spruce years EVER!

Very Best Wishes,

Emily Moore,
